Low-tox living guide

Updated: Apr 17

Welcome to the world of low-tox living! Shifting to a lower-tox lifestyle can be challenging while navigating all the new ingredients, recipes & products. In this blog, I'll break down the basics of going low-tox, my favourite non-toxic brands, & my 4-step formula to make a sustainable, long-term shift to low-tox living!

Why you should go low-tox:

Choosing low-tox alternatives benefits both our health & the health of the planet. Conventional cleaners, cosmetics & fragrances often contain microplastic, chemicals, carcinogens & endocrine disruptors- creating health-harming products. On a worldly note, many conventional products use cruel animal testing, and improper storage & disposal of chemicals leading to waterway pollution. Overall conventional products are unsustainable, un-healthy and harmful.

My favourite low-tox living brands & swaps

  • Pots & pans: should always be stainless steel or cast iron. AVOID non-stick, they have a very harmful, chemical-filled coating on them.

  • Cutting boards & utensils: Do your best to get wooden, glass or stainless steel utensils & cutting boards.

  • Food storage: opt for glass or metal food containers. Avoid plastic food containers, they often leach microplastics & chemicals into our food- especially when heated.

  • Makeup: I love the brand's Ilia, Merit, Honest Beauty, Beauty Counter Kosas & Dime for low-tox, cruelty-free beauty!

  • Skincare: I love so many brands when it comes to skincare (I'm a bit of a skincare junkie), but my current favs are Wildcraft, Good Molecules, Mad Hippie, Organic Formulations & my all-time-favourite Ovle Bio Organics!

  • Bodycare: My favourite body-care brands would have to be Attitude & Wildcraft!

  • Haircare: I use a few different brands on my hair, the first one I ever used was Avalon Organics shampoo & conditioner, but Attitude makes some beautiful haircare products. Apart from shampoos & conditioners, I love using oils (Jojoba, almond, castor & MCT) from NOW supplements.

  • Fragrance: Finding toxin-free fragrance can be challenging, but I have found 2 amazing companies- DIME & Henery Rose Fragrance.

  • Sanitary: feminine products are often laced with bleach & fragrance, which can be incredibly detrimental to the delicate pH & health of the vagina. Opt for organic, non-bleach cotton or reusable pads and tampons or a diva cup!

  • Fragrance: ditch the chemical-filled candles & opt for essential oils in a diffuser!

  • Bedding: if you want to go full non-tox you can try out dye-free, organic cotton sheets!

How to switch to low-tox living

I like to use the 4-step method to make a long-term, sustainable shift in going low-tox! Of course- like any major change- step one is research! Research low-tox brands, understand branding & determine what you are, and are not, willing to give up.

Go through your current makeup, skincare, haircare, cleaning and home/ body fragrance supply. List what you have, and how much you have and plan your low-tox swap for when you run out.

Make simple swaps, like opting for organic coffee instead of conventional, or buy local when possible. Make this lifestyle one that integrates seamlessly into your life. Make informed consumer decisions

Going low-tox will seem like a hefty investment at first- from new/ unfamiliar products to product storage and recipe research it may feel overwhelming, but invest the time for a healthier future.

Now you’ve done it. You’ve made the swaps, you’ve done the research and created a new lifestyle. You may feel more comfortable sticking to the brands I’ve listed in this guide, but I encourage you to use the resources I’ve given & branch out with new products

If you implement these 4 steps to low-tox living you can make a long-term sustainable shift! I know you can do this for your health & our planet. Wishing you all the best in your low-tox journey!
