Detox that works

Let’s talk about something that always pops up around this time of year: detoxing. June rolls in, the sun is shining, and suddenly our social media is filled with juice cleanses, skinny teas, and dieting programs that promise to wash away months of stress in three days.

But here’s the truth I wish more people knew: detoxification isn’t something you force, it’s something your body is already doing. Every single day. No green juice required.

Your Body Is Already Detoxing

You don’t need to buy a cleanse to detox. Your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, skin, lungs, and gut are constantly working behind the scenes to process and eliminate toxins. It’s a full-time job, and they’re amazing at it when supported properly.

When we hear “detox,” we often think “restrict.” But true detoxification isn’t about less food or fewer calories. It’s about more support, more nourishment, more rest, more balance.

Why Juice Cleanses Miss the Mark

I get it, juice feels light, vibrant, and healthy. But living on juice for days at a time? That’s not detoxing, that’s depleting.

Here’s why juice cleanses can make things worse:

  • No fiber → means your body has a harder time moving toxins out through the bowels.

  • Blood sugar spikes → can cause energy crashes, irritability, and even hormone disruption.

  • Lack of protein + healthy fats → leaves your body without the building blocks it needs to do real healing work.

Juice is a great addition to a balanced routine, not the whole routine.

So What Is Detoxing, Really?

Supporting detox is about clearing space in your life, not just your meals. It’s a whole-body, whole-life process that includes:

  • Eating colourful, whole foods (think beets, greens, lemons, garlic, cruciferous veggies).

  • Staying hydrated with mineral-rich water and herbal teas.

  • Moving your body gently to stimulate lymphatic flow (hello, morning walks and stretching!)

  • Breathing deeply to support your lungs and nervous system.

  • Resting intentionally to allow your body to repair.

It’s about reconnecting with your body and listening to what it truly needs, not jumping to extremes.

This Summer, Try This Instead

Rather than stripping things away, I invite you to think about what you can add in. What would it feel like to support your body gently, consistently, lovingly?

Maybe it’s adding a handful of greens to your plate. Maybe it’s sipping nettle tea in the afternoons. Maybe it’s saying no to one thing and yes to slowing down.

Whatever it looks like for you, know that your body is wise. It doesn’t need restricting, just support. When you nourish your detox pathways instead of shocking them, you’ll feel the difference. Clearer skin, better digestion, calmer moods, deeper energy.

That’s a real detox. And it feels really, really good.
